Stonefly nymphs live in fast, oxygenated, rocky water and take two to three years to mature — which means there is always a big one in the drift, all year round, in exactly the kind of pocket water where a heavy fly is needed. Tied large and dark with a heavy bead so it reaches the bottom in a short drift. Fish it dead-drift, right along the stones.
